5.0 out of 5 stars Short term review: Very impressed! – Long term review: Jury still out…
I bought this charger for permanent home mount, and the Tera 32A mobile charger here on Amazon, ahead of taking delivery of my Tesla Model Y. Given the price, I was a little skeptical of the quality with these, but I took a shot with a 30 day free return / review window so I had something to charge the new vehicle with when I got it.These were so affordable, that buying both still cost me less than a single charger of most other brands.Long story short – after about 6 weeks of ownership, I’m very impressed with both. This wall mount 48A charger has been pretty much flawless thus far – it’s been a workhorse charging the Model Y without issue at the full 48A with no weird overheating issues or anything else. It came with a J1772 to NACS adapter so I didn’t have to buy that separately, it has Bluetooth and wifi connectivity to the Smart Life *and the Tuya* apps for settings, scheduling, and smart control, and the installation, which I did myself, was mostly painless. If Tera is looking at these reviews, here’s my suggested improvements:1. Make the built-in cord and nema 14-50 plug that feeds the unit longer. It’s only about 12-18″ long and it doesn’t allow for much flexibility in placement given your nema receptacle.2. In addition to #1, because the cord comes out of the bottom of the unit, the plug needs to be clocked differently to fit the standard direction of most nema 14-50 receptacles. Most receptacles have the round ground spade clocked at the top for a standard wall install – this is how my receptacle was installed at my home. However, with the cord coming out of the bottom of the unit and clearly being designed such that the Tera charger is meant to be installed above the receptacle, the plug should have thr ground spade at the top when hanging straight down, but it doesn’t – the ground spade is at the bottom when the cord is pointed down. And bc the cord is so short, it is basically impossible to turn right side up and plug in. So I had to buy a short nema 14-50 extension cord to wall mount the unit. I guess the receptacle could be spun around on the wall so that the ground is at the bottom too, but that wasn’t an easy option for me because my receptacle was designed to be installed with the ground at the top. **So – if you plan to buy this unit and you haven’t gotten your 240V receptacle installed yet – try and get your electrician to clock the receptacle with the ground spade at the bottom.**3. The J1772 to NACS adapter does come with a special plastic ring to basically bind the J1772 to the NACS connector in an innovative way for us Tesla owners. But the ring comes with no instructions, and it’s not incredibly well designed to keep the adapter permanently mounted to the J1772 end. I had to be creative with some electrical tape to keep the adapter connected, and it’s still not ideal. So Tera needs to make this adapter ring and it’s tabs and attachments a little more robust, include some proper instructions for how to use install the ring properly for a good tight, permanent fit, or, with everyone switching to NACS shortly anyway on the cars, just come out with a Tera charger option where it just has a NACS connector permanently connected on the end and no J1772 at all.Otherwise, though, very impressed. Charges well, long charging cord for plugging in all over the garage and even outside it, quality construction, and great included accessories for a Tesla. If I can remember to do it, I will come back and post a long term review or update this if I have any issues over time. But at this moment on 11/25/23, I wholeheartedly endorse this product for quality and price. Nice job Tera! (And here’s hoping this review provides some good feedback for future product updates down the road!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great EV Charger
We received the charger early, it is direct connected to our electrical box so we can safely utilize the 48AMPs continuously. Otherwise on the NEMA plug which is not really rated for continuous current it was recommended not to exceed 40 AMP. We have a Tesla Model Y and the charger came with the appropriate adaptor and charges very quickly. We don’t use the mobile app as our car directs the charging. Very Happy with this charger!

5.0 out of 5 stars No issues – satisfied with purchase
Purchased for charging a 2023, VW ID.4. Installed a 50 amp breaker and ran 6 AWG wire to this unit. FYI, 4 AWG will be too thick for the charger’s terminals and won’t fit. I don’t use the app, as I haven’t found it helpful. When the car is done for the day, I use the screen on the charger to simply set how many hours in the future I want it to start charging, as I get an EV price break from the power company between midnight and 6 am, plug it in and I’m done. In the morning, it’s charged to the 80% level I set in the car’s program. If you’re new to EV ownership, they do not recommend charging the battery to 100%, as it degrades its life. Finally, the power level I use for the charger is set to 40 amps, although the charger will pull as high as 48 amps. At 40 amps the charge usually takes between 3 and 4 hours depending on how much juice was still in the battery at the end of the day. Setting the hours and amps is very simple. I like the unit, have no complaints and the price is right.

4.0 out of 5 stars Charger works fine, but cable too thick
The charger is fine and charges the Tesla at about 40mi/hour with 42A/220V. The only grip is the thickness of the cable. My wife and daughter have a hard time rolling it back up and leave it on the floor and let me roll it up and put in on the wall around the device. I’ve only had it for a couple weeks, so, we’ll see how it works over time.

  6. Zuofu

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great – supports up to 48A if your car supports it. English translation could be better.
This device works great in terms of being space saving and supporting up to 48A. It comes with a pretty long cable, as well as an additional cable hook/holster. I saw from another review that this technically exceeds the specification of the wall socket, but I had a licensed electrician install the dedicated circuit with a 60A breaker, and they seemed pretty confident that it would be fine charging at 48A. In any case, the charging current may be limited via the app using the smart features, if you are not comfortable charging at 48A or if the install is not a dedicated circuit. Also, mine was shipped with the emergency stop switch engaged, so it would not initially charge until I figured this out, but unfortunately this took awhile because of the poor translation on the firmware – see below:My minor complaint (which doesn’t justify the review losing a star) is that there is tons of awkward phrasing, mis-spellings, and other „Chinglish“ on both the app and the control panel. I wish they had a native English speaker look through the text and re-translate. Most of the time this is just awkward phrasing, for example the app refers to „charging pile“ which no English speaker refers to a battery as. Sometimes this is legitimately confusing, as in the case where the emergency stop switch was engaged and it the control panel was non-descript.

4.0 out of 5 stars Edited. Nice but be CAREFUL
This afternoon I plugged it into a 14-50 outlet and proceeded to charge the Truck… Then I went to the setup app and I was shocked to see it was charging at 48 amps. Bad Bad.. I turned it off, unplugged it rom the truck and set the output to the legal 40 amps with a 14-50 plug. There is no way an manufacture should ship a unit set up like this. The DEFAULT should be 40 amps. Now I wonder if 48 amps is the default and it will it revert to 48 amps with a power glitch?Other than that it is a nice unit especially for the price I paid, and it charged my Ford Lightning without a problem. I don’t know if I trust it now and I may be sending it back.EDIT:The manufacture reached out to me via Amazon message. They have changed the default current rating to a realistic 40 Amps. They modified the app to change default current output. I am pleased that they reacted so quickly to address the issue I brought up. I changed my rating from a 3 star to a 4 star rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast charging
For an Amazon product its really good, pricey at first but compared to other options it’s affordable, has a good warranty and options to schedule the charging at certain time. You need it to be professionally installed but after the initial set up it’s very easy to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great,
Prior to purchasing an EV, over the past few months I rented a Polestar 2, Chevy Bolt, Hyundai Ionic 5, and a Tesla Model 3. I have been able to charge them all, including the Tesla with the included adapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Featured packed charger for the price point
My wife and I have both picked up new EVs this year and as is typical of me I’ve gone on a binge getting every accessory I can find. I got this for her office. It doesn’t exactly ‚reinvent the wheel‘ when it comes to EV chargers but it does offer good performance and a ton of features at a very reasonable price point. It has everything you’d expect to get with a quality EV charger. It’s waterproof, dustproof and has all sorts of other protections baked in such as overload protection, short circuit protection, etc. It also has a really nice touch screen interface as well as a robust smartphone app. There’s some other impressive touches–a J1772 to Tesla adapter is included as is a cable holder for Tesla. Neither of these are particularly expensive but most of the chargers I’ve seen expect you to get your own. Overall, one of the better combinations of quality, performance and value I’ve seen. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sophisticated Good Charger
Many great and excellent features makes this charger very useful, and valuable also, as many of those features will not only save one time, but money also. Being in full control of the charging process makes a differrence and having the ability to determine the preciseness of the chanrging is what sets chargers apart. Nice and convenient to use also. A great charger. 🙂

5.0 out of 5 stars Works with all EVs.
The Tera charger was really simple to introduce with the included layout. I wish more makers would incorporate layouts like this when there’s something you want to introduce on a wall. After establishment I had the option to introduce the application and associate the charger to the web and update the firmware. It was an extremely fast cycle. It seems as though the EVSE all alone is just equipped for changing the charger amperage and utilizing a period defer accuse yet of the assistance of the application’s cloud booking motor, the charger’s genuine capacities are opened. I like the charger actually and am extremely content with it; having acknowledged the usefulness I’ll mount it all the more forever on my home before long. Different highlights are a 25 Foot line, viable all J1772 EV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Effortless and Reliable EV Charging Solution.
This EV charger is a game-changer. The included wall mount and template streamlined the installation process, making it surprisingly easy. The charger itself feels rugged, and the cord’s weatherproofing assures me that it can withstand the elements. The 5-year warranty adds an extra layer of comfort, ensuring peace of mind. What truly sets this charger apart is the companion app – it’s outstanding, offering a wide range of flexible charging options that cater to various needs. The fact that it came with a Tesla adapter was a pleasant bonus, demonstrating the thoughtfulness put into this product. For any EV owner looking for a robust, user-friendly charging solution, this is a fantastic pick.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Charged a 2020 Tesla Model Y at 40A
The Tera charger was super easy to install with the included template. I wish more manufacturers would include templates like this when there’s something you need to install on a wall. After installation I was able to install the app and connect the charger to the internet and update the firmware. It was a very quick process. Then I plugged in the Model Y and it ramped up to 9.6kV and charged at 40A for around 30 minutes. At that part the Model Y was at its full limit set by the car. The charged worked flawlessly very happy. The cable is extremely robust as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good charger
This is a pretty good wall ev charger. You can set a timer and change amp level. It uses the 14-50 (4 prong) connector and can charge pretty quickly for a mere level 2 charger. It hangs on the wall well. It has a built in wall holster in the unit and you can wrap the cord around the unit. It also has a j1772 to Tesla adapter so you can charge Teslas and most other regular EVs. You can also do things through the app, but it’s nice that it’s not necessary.

Nice unit easy to use But if you need help than you are on an island. Their customer support is basically a human answering machine has zero knowledge zero caring. They don’t know anything about the product they simply take messages and you will hopefully get an e mail back. I didn’t even get a call back. Trying to finger this unit out by using google and YouTube. The instructions are not helpful much

5.0 out of 5 stars A must need for any EV owner – High quality and charges great!
I recently started using the Tera EV charger for my Tesla, and it’s been absolutely fantastic! This Level 2 charger with a J1772 connector and a 25 ft cable makes charging convenient and fast with its 48A capacity. The manual setting for amps and scheduling directly on the unit is super handy. Ive had zero problems so far!Installation was easy with the NEMA 14-50 plug, and it works flawlessly. The 5-year warranty adds peace of mind. It’s a bit bulky, but the performance and flexibility more than make up for it. Highly recommend it for any EV owner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tera WiFi EVSE
The charger comes with a 14-50 plug attached by default. If you open up the back panel on the charger, you can remove the 14-50 plug and hardwire in your own circuit to get the full 48 amps.Note that the 14-50 plug should not be used with a 48 amp charge; doing so is against the electric code which calls for a derating of 20% for EV charging due to the fact that it is classified as a continuous load. The maximum EV draw from a 14-50 plug should be 40 amps, so make sure to set it appropriately or hard-wire a 60 amp circuit instead of the included plug.I was a little unsure about the charger’s capabilities when connected via WiFi; there’s not a lot of information about what it can or can’t do on the product page.It looks like the EVSE on its own is only capable of changing the charger amperage and using a time delay charge (wait between 1 and 11 hours to charge) but with the help of the app’s cloud scheduling engine, the charger’s real capabilities are unlocked. The companion app they tell you to download is called „Smart Life“ now there are a couple of apps that look like Smart Life on the app store, so I downloaded the first result, Smart Life – Smart Living, which recognized the charger right away, and was able to pair it to my WiFi.I explored around the app for a bit as it wasn’t terribly intuitive to set charge timing to match time of use electric rates. For my use case scenario, I need to tell the charger not to charge between 4pm and 9pm, but all other times are OK. I ended up setting up an Automation under the Scene section of the app, configured for if Schedule 4:00 PM or Tera EV – Total Power > 0.000kW then Tera EV – Switch: Off, with precondition time between 3:59 and 8:59pm.While I like the flexibility to not only trigger on different conditions detected by the charger, but also to use preconditions like time between, I can’t help but feel this functionality should be made simpler to make it more accessible to less technical users. In short, the charger is a good charger that functions well in it’s core function, and it has access to a powerful but complex scheduler that allows significant customizations to functionality.I like the charger personally and am very happy with it; having accepted the functionality I’ll be mounting it more permanently on the side of my house in the coming weeks. However, the fact that the extra functionality is hidden behind a layer of complexity may be a roadblock for some users, and so I am only giving four stars. I hope that in the future, Tera will bundle more advanced scheduling and time of use functionality directly within the charger configuration.

4.0 out of 5 stars High powered, but limited features
This EVSE can deliver plenty of amperage. I really like the level of control over the amperage. However, the ’smart‘ function was extremely difficult to set up.For you readers, I have plenty of experience with the ’smart life‘ app (also known as Tuya) and have set up several dozen automation components with it. This EVSE was by far the most difficult to bring online. I ended up needing to message the seller, who said to „press and reset“ the emergency stop button three times within twelve seconds. This finally got the charger to start the pairing process after it had been installed for several days. The experience after pairing within the app was less than impressive. The biggest feature it unlocks is fine control of the delivery amperage. Other than that the app doesn’t do too much more than the charger itself. I would really like to see charge scheduling (although my car can handle that) and load shedding options in the app.Other than that, the ETL listing on this device is genuine (although not under the Tera brand name), and provides a great deal of comfort. I know I can plug in and charge safely, and that this device has passed its tests and is safe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does everything I need
My favorite charger. I have a few places to charge with a different charger at each location. I would have to say this is my favorite charger. It’s easy to use and you can adjust the current to your needs. It plugs right into my 14-50 and looks good. I would have to say my favorite thing about this charger is the screen. My other chargers don’t have one. Being able to see some information makes me confident all is well after I plug it in. I’m always worried about overheating issues when you push so many amps through these things. But unlike some other chargers I’ve used, this one stays nice and cool. Very nice solid charger!

4.0 out of 5 stars A reliable, fast, and user-adjustable charging solution
Upon first interaction, the Tera for Tesla Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger impresses with its sleek design and the reassuring solidity of its construction. The packaging is straightforward, which could be seen as a nod to the eco-consciousness one would expect from EV users. The extended 25-foot cable is particularly striking, promising convenience in a variety of parking situations. The standout feature of this charger is its versatility. The ability to manually adjust charging amps and schedule charging sessions both on the unit and via an app speaks to a user-centric design. The ETL certification offers peace of mind, indicating adherence to North American safety standards, which complements the generous 5-year warranty.User-friendliness seems to be a priority, with a clear touch screen and intuitive controls. The flexibility to hardwire the unit or use a NEMA 14-50 plug adds to its appeal, although it should be noted that a professional electrician is recommended for installation.Performance is robust, with the Level 2 charger providing up to 9 times the speed of Level 1 chargers. This efficiency, combined with the charger’s compatibility with older Tesla models and other brands via the J1772 adapter, positions it as a highly functional piece of equipment. While the charger performs well, the need for software upgrades in older Tesla models could be a hurdle for some users. Also, the necessity to confirm compatibility before purchase suggests that the device may not be as universally adaptable as one might hope.In terms of value for money, the Tera EV Charger seems to deliver, especially considering the fast charging capabilities and the thoughtful inclusion of adjustable currents to suit different electrical infrastructures. The positives are clear: safety certification, user-friendly design, rapid charging, and a lengthy warranty. The downsides are minor but worth considering: potential compatibility issues and the need for professional installation.Overall, the Tera EV Charger seems like a solid investment for EV owners looking for a reliable, fast, and user-adjustable charging solution. Ideal for those who value both performance and flexibility, it would be a particularly good fit for tech-savvy users who appreciate the convenience of app integration.

We replaced our original OEM Tesla Charger with this new Fast Charger. I have to admit it does charge our Vehicle AT LEAST 2-3x Faster than our original OEM Charger.I am very impressed at its performance in charging so quickly & efficiently. We easily mounted it up on our garage wall for easy access. I can charge my Tesla no matter which way I park it. I can even charge my tesla from outside the garage thanks to this extended length charging cord.I am very impressed with the quality of this charger.

5.0 out of 5 stars TERA – Smart Charge your Smart EV
So this was a great pickup. It smart adjusts between my EV’s and is a full L2 charger which actually gets my volt and my MY2023 charged as fast as you can do at home assuming you have all the power amperage for it. I would say it was smart, great in light rain and no issues or overheating to notice. The color is good and doesn’t stick out. Great way to charge you or your friends cars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good product
I was debating whether to buy a Tesla charger but when I came across this one I thought it might be a good fit. It’s a 48 amp charger which will require a 60 amp breaker. I would strongly recommend getting a professional electrician to install it. Unless you are familiar with doing work on an open electrical panel. I had some difficulty with the app but after a quick call to customer service they were able to walk me through it in under 5 minutes. One of the nice features is being able to schedule charging times at night so I can take advantage of lower electric rates. It is virtually silent when operating. Very happy with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value charger for Tesla.
Still haven’t figured out how to get the wifi working and I’m usually good with that stuff. I use the Smart Life app for almost all of my extensive smart home equipment. At this point I’ve given up and will try again later. As for the charging. I hardwired it with 6AWG THHN wire in metal conduit. I terminated the wire with 6gauge#10 copper battery terminals and covered them with battery post covers. 60amp non-gfci breaker for this 48amp continuous circuit. However I set it to 40amps on the base station and and 40amp on my 2023Model Y to keep things cool (I don’t need the full 48amps but wanted the option and a 14-50NEMA outlet should technically have a GFCI breaker according to NEC2020). This setup gives me 40miles an hour (44mi/hr if I upped it to 48amps. All other aspects of the charger are quality however it seems they removed the terminal block as shown in the user manual, making the hard-wiring cumbersome.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the price a great product
This is a great charger overall, i have tested quite a few and have found that this is one the better units. What sets it apart from the other units is that you have the ability to monitor through your phone while the unit is charging. Now the only issue i have with the unit is that the port needs to be upgraded to a more durable and harder material. So overall a great charging unit and easy to set up. Great buy.

  33. C

5.0 out of 5 stars Working great as the charger for everyone
First off, this is just a regular type 1 charger that comes with a Tesla (type 2) adapter. You can use an adapter like that on any type 1 charger as far as I understand. That being said, with the adapter, it’s good for all the EVs on the old farm where I live.It has an app. If you don’t need to make complicated charging schedules, then you don’t need the app. I live in an area that just doesn’t have peak charges. It’s always the same, so I just plug it in and ignore scheduling. You can delay it with a button on it, but that’s limited. This had no problem maxing out my RAV4 Prime, which is no surprise. The RAV4 can only accept up to 32A. My aunt’s Model X apparently can max this out, which hasn’t caused any problems. None of us have had any problems just plugging this in, selecting a charge speed, and then ignoring it for several hours or overnight. It has always charged and never thrown any error codes. My wiring to this is entirely new. Everything from the outlet up to the box is new, including the breaker. I have a feeling that old wiring won’t like this much.Installation was extremely easy. It has a very straightforward mounting plate. If you can use a drill, you can mount this.Build quality seems pretty good. I wouldn’t want to drop it, but this should be mounted in place and not moving around anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought this charger for my Model S after tesla wall charger died
So far I love it. “Only” getting 40 amps on the 14-50 Outlet I replaced the tesla wall charger which got 48a, but this charger will go 48 if you hard-wire it like the last one was. Worked with my brand new 2024 Model S with no issues at all. Have not tested the WIFI features yet. Will come back and update if something changes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great, great price
So far the charger works great and automatically set the output to match my older EV to it’s max charge allowed. The charger comes with a Tesla adapter (which I didn’t need but might in the future), a mounting plate for both the standard charger (if you didn’t want to use the one on the charger) as well as a mounting plate for the included Tesla adapter if you need it, and also a mounting hook for the cable (if you didn’t want to hang all of the weight onto the charger itself). I am really happy with the purchase so far and if I did indeed have any gripes it would be that setting up the app was kind of a pain in the ass and the version of the charger I received did not have any buttons or options to adjust it or check the settings on the charger but instead you must do it through the app, but after getting it all setup I would indeed buy this again if I needed another EV charger, the price can’t be beat for the quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect
Easy installation, works good. The only drawback is that charging gun with Tesla adapter does not fit into the charger cradle an has to be placed somewhere else.

5.0 out of 5 stars works great, charging at 28amps
The charger and cable both seem to be quality. Comes with all hardware and even a Tesla adapter. It is more compact than my Bosch EV charger. I have no way of setting the amps on the unit and on the display it says 28amps. The Amazon info said 32, 40, 48 that makes you belive that you can select amps on the charger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thousands saved!
Bought this to have as an add on charger for the garage. It has become my goto charger every night, 5 1/2 hours to full, and cost me 5 bucks to charge. Love this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Premium 40A/48A EV charger.
This latest Tera home EV charger is compact and easy on the eyes. The LCD displays vital info. This particular charger can be plug n play with the NEMA 14-50 cable for up to 40A of current, but if you have a large enough circuit (60A+) you have the option of hardwiring it for up to 48A of current. Includes WIFI so you can use the Tera app to schedule and monitor your charge sessions. Other features are a 25 Foot cord, compatible with TESLAs (with included adapter) and all J1772 EV’s. The built in holster in the charging body keeps things nice and tidy. 5 year warranty for peace of mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use
This EV charger looks and functions excellent. The size of the display screen is great, as it is easy to read and easy to use. The 25 foot cord is more than enough for home use, and I love that it connects to the charger, so you don’t have to worry about how to store it when it’s not in use. You can schedule charging to save yourself some money, and the app is easy to navigate. If you already have the correct plugin this is easy to setup and get charging. It has a lot of built in protections, and being that it is a 48 amp, it provides a quick charge.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY NICE!
This is just great. It installed very easy, my EV just loves it and it’s fast (if I want it to be). I am getting the full 48 AMPS and the smart features are just great to have. This is perfect and I am crazy happy with it. Five big stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works as designed!
It requires some software polishing but it works well. It charges my Tesla at 48A. The cable gets a bit hot but that is normal I guess. The good things is that the incoming short cable is cooler and the 1450 plug’s temperatures is not raising. I lowered it down to 40A and it does not get hot I’ll keep it like that by default for overnight charging. it is nice to know I can charge faster if needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Charger
I am happy with this charger, we wanted one with all the bells and whistles and this charger fit the bill. It was simple to install and set up. The BlueTooth and WIFI work with no issues. This charger feels well made and has a 25′ charging cable that makes it easier to get to our charging port without having to pull all the way in the garage. The plugs feel well made and fit well with no play but not difficult to remove. We have used this charger for the last month and have had no issues. We are pleased with this charger, and we would buy it again. 5 STARS

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast charger
We have a 80A panel and this EV charger is 48A as advertised. Very fast charger, especially for a home one. The 25 foot cable is pretty standard. Everything is high quality and I tested the scheduler, which works. You can schedule it to charge at night when rates are more affordable. Very good charger.

5.0 out of 5 stars This TERA Charger Has Nearly Every Bell & Whistle I Must Have. They Are:
The media could not be loaded. But first, I have concluded, from my review, that there are basically two (2) types of chargers. Those that have the following “I must have” features and those that do not. If a charger has some, it still does not fall into the “I want this charger” category. The “I must have” features are not unobtainable, they are simple and are so basic, that not having them could pose a safety issue to me and my property.I also want to note that I have been impressed with most of TERA’s chargers. This charger is no exception. I am impressed. My must have charger features surroundWhether every major component of the charger underwent some sort of review by independent laboratories to investigate whether the charger meets certain standards that promote physical and environmental safety benchmarks, to prevent or reduce loss of life and property. What are those organizations? The organizations are each a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). They are, in part, if not wholly, the following:• Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL)• Intertek Testing Services (ITS) / Edison Testing Laboratories (ETL)• Canadian Standards Association (CSA)To my understanding, a product [such as this charger] was to have been tested to meet or exceed all necessary standards and requirements for its particular class. Something that has been certified by a NRTL is deemed effective and reliable in its classification, and in theory, is safe for use, in that country whose standards were set out. In other words, the product is to perform as expected, when expected. (The “certifications” are also often referred to as „marks“ as the certification logos are sometimes silk- screened, imprinted, or „marked“ onto the final manufactured product. The item can also be referred to as „listed“ as the particular product was to have also been registered with the NRTL as having received certification.I see the following certifications with this charger.ETL and ULWhere?Where this shines are that this charger is ETL & UL listed, from its plug to its power cord, to its transformer, to its EVE cord, to its J1772 charging gun, in other words, from one end of the charger to its the other end. This is only seen in the higher priced chargers. [On lower end chargers, you just see it in pieces and parts; whereas this charger it’s from one end to the other end.]This TERA for Tesla (and non-Tesla) Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger is strictly a Level 2 charger that is rated at up to 48A. The beauty of this charger is there is a manual setting of the amps that can flow through this charger, i.e., from 16-amps to 48-amps, on a 240V line [My power company supplies up to 250V.]Compare all other chargers against this charger?Possibly, yes. I would consider this charger as my baseline, when comparing all other chargers. If the other chargers compared do “not” have all this charger’s important to me features, then I would consider those other chargers to be something less; that’s how impressed I am with this Tera charger. Is this perfect? No, but I like it.Why?One reason is that this charger seems to reach out to my EV and shake hands flawlessly. In other words, this charger seems to communicate admirably with my EV’s Battery Management System (BMS). For instance, as my battery neared full charge, I could see this charger started to lower the amount of amperage being delivered. I have only seen that with higher end chargers. What ETL/UL tells meThat ETL/UL marks tell me the manufacturer is trying to tell the world they seek high standards and stand behind what they sell. [ETL was founded by Thomas Edison. ETL’s heritage goes back some (125) yearsIs it required? An ETL/UL certification isn’t a requirement to sell an electronic device in the US. But do I really want to trust a device that the manufacturer did not want a third-party to certify? Typically, certifications are noted. I see ETL certifications and a UL certification all over this, for me, that’s what sets this apart from other low-priced chargers and aligns this with the better chargers.Reasons selectedA primary reason this was selected, over another, was because of this being ETL/UL listed. However, nowhere was RoHS referencedRoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS), which are European Union rules restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment to protect the environment and public health. There was no reference that this was a RoHS certified device. This RoHS certification weakens my opinion of this, a bit.WiringThe cord has thick 8 AWG wiring. It’s thick, compared to others. Thin wiring gets hotter faster and loses electricity through that heat. So, for instance, (100’) of 12-gauge wiring loses 77 watts of energy, just through heat lossAWG means?American Wire Gauge. The smaller the number, the bigger the wire is, so 8 AWG is thicker than 15 AWG. When pumping through higher voltage and amperage, you want thick, heavier wiring, so I am good with this, however, think it could have been 6AWG, since this runs as much as 32-amps and my rule of thumb is 6 AWG for 55-amps. This, in my eyes, weakens this, a bit, but obviously ETL gave this charger its listing, and they know what they are doing, whereas my thoughts are just preferences.Display?Yes, this does have an LED display that reads various information, it’s a simple display, nothing fancy and it’s medium sized. Is this truly a Level 2 & Level 1 Charger?Hmm, I say this is primarily a Level 2 charger. As for Level 1, I am “not” plugging this into a typical NEMA 5-15 outlet, as I cannot adjust amperage on my EV and this charger will be drawing 16-amps on a typical 15-amp household outlet that is designed only to handle 12-amps. If I did, I am risking Grandma’s outlet to a melt down or worse. Ask an electrician. So, no, I am not using this as a typical Level 1 charger. I was not supplied with the appropriate dog-bone and finding a NEMA 6-20R is few and far between, it’s more of a specialty plug. However, this true level 2 charger has the capability of dispersing lower speeds, by reducing-amps to 16.Country of originMade in China.PortabilityHmm, not really, it’s big and bulky and the cables are heavy.SafetyOh, yes, I always shut power off the power, at the circuit, when plugging this in or taking the plug out, for optimal safety.Concluding thoughtsI can go on, but the final word on this is it plugged-in perfectly, worked flawlessly, and gave a simple flashing ring light show, at Level 2. I am rating this a “weak” five (5) star; the UL and ETL listings kept this at five (5) star.I hope my thoughts added helpful information.
